In a significant move for the burgeoning Indian space tech sector, Digantara, a pioneering space surveillance startup, has secured $50 million in a new Series B funding round. This investment signals a growing global demand for advanced space-based defense capabilities, particularly in the realm of missile tracking and space situational awareness (SSA). Digantara’s expansion beyond traditional SSA highlights a critical shift in how nations are approaching national security in an increasingly congested and contested space environment. The company is poised to become a key player in providing vital early warning systems and bolstering defense infrastructure worldwide.

Digantara’s Funding and Growth Trajectory

The all-equity Series B round saw participation from new investors including 360 ONE Asset and SBI Investments of Japan, alongside serial entrepreneur Ronnie Screwvala. Existing backers, Peak XV Partners and Kalaari Capital, also reaffirmed their confidence in Digantara’s vision. This funding injection brings the total capital raised by the Bengaluru-headquartered startup to $64.5 million, more than doubling the $10 million Series A1 round secured over two years ago. This substantial financial backing will fuel Digantara’s ambitious expansion plans and technological advancements.

The Rising Need for Space-Based Defense

Globally, governments are dramatically increasing investment in space-based surveillance and early-warning systems. The escalating frequency of missile launches and intentional satellite interference necessitates faster and more reliable detection methods than traditional ground-based radar can provide. Digantara aims to fill this critical gap by leveraging a sophisticated network of space- and ground-based infrared (IR) sensors, coupled with advanced software-based analytics and intelligence. This integrated approach offers a more comprehensive and responsive defense solution.

From Space Situational Awareness to Missile Tracking

Founded in 2020, Digantara initially focused on space situational awareness (SSA), meticulously tracking debris and objects that pose a threat to operational satellites. The company has strategically expanded its capabilities to encompass missile detection and tracking, building upon the core sensing and analytics technologies developed for SSA. According to founder and CEO Anirudh Sharma, this expansion is a natural progression, leveraging existing expertise to address a pressing global security need.

SCOT Satellite and Expansion into the US Market

Digantara’s commitment to innovation was demonstrated with the launch of its first space surveillance satellite, SCOT (Space Camera for Object Tracking), in January via SpaceX’s Transporter-12 mission. SCOT enables crucial space-to-space observation capabilities. Further solidifying its global presence, Digantara opened an office in Colorado Springs shortly after, marking a strategic push into the U.S. defense market. This move has already yielded contracts with U.S. Space Command for analytics-as-a-service and selection for the Missile Defense Agency’s SHIELD contract vehicle, supporting next-generation missile defense programs.

Technological Advancements and Infrastructure Development

Digantara is actively enhancing its infrared capabilities, extending beyond existing sensors to include mid- and long-wave infrared technologies. “Given we’ve already built IR sensors, we are now extending our IR capabilities to other domains like mid- and long-wave infrared,” Sharma told GearTech. This expansion will broaden the scope of detectable threats and improve the accuracy of tracking systems.

To meet national security requirements and regulatory constraints, Digantara has strategically divided its operations geographically. The U.S. team is focused on developing larger, 100-kilogram class satellites tailored to American defense needs, while the India operation concentrates on analytics, data processing, and SSA. This structure ensures compliance with defense procurement regulations, which often mandate domestic design and manufacturing for sensitive systems.

Current Contracts and Revenue Growth

Digantara has already secured contracts totaling approximately $25 million. The company currently operates across India, Singapore, and the U.S., with plans to expand into Europe by establishing a local entity as early as 2026. In India, Digantara operates a 25,000-square-foot manufacturing facility capable of producing up to five satellites simultaneously, with significant scaling plans underway. A memorandum of understanding with the state government of Andhra Pradesh outlines the establishment of a larger facility capable of manufacturing up to 30 satellites concurrently, slated to come online next year.

Digantara has been selected as the winning bidder for government defense tenders in India and is finalizing administrative procedures before commencing work, according to Sharma.

Future Plans and Expansion Strategy

Looking ahead to 2026-27, Digantara plans to significantly expand its space- and ground-based infrastructure. This includes deploying additional electro-optical and LiDAR satellites for enhanced SSA, space-based sensors for early missile warning and tracking, and a larger network of ground-based observatories. The company is also exploring the potential of its LiDAR and laser technologies for future interceptor systems, demonstrating a commitment to cutting-edge defense solutions.

Satellite Launch Schedule and Deployment Goals

Digantara has a robust satellite launch schedule, with planned launches through SpaceX in March, June, and October. The October mission is expected to involve multiple satellite deployments. The company aims to deploy a total of 15 satellites over the next two years, significantly bolstering its surveillance and defense capabilities.

Allocation of Funds and Revenue Projections

The recent $50 million funding will primarily support these launches. Approximately $7–$10 million is earmarked for expansion in the United States, while $2–$3 million will be allocated to establishing operations in Europe. The remaining funds will be used to scale manufacturing and operations in India.

Digantara has experienced impressive revenue growth, increasing more than tenfold over the past two years. While specific figures remain undisclosed, Sharma projects annual revenues of $25–$30 million within the next 18 months as defense and government contracts ramp up.

Currently, Digantara employs around 125 people, with approximately 80-85 engineers dedicated to research, development, and operations.
